DANVILLE, Contra Costa County — October 23, 2026. Opening a small company from home in Danville can require a local business license even when customers never visit. At the same time, some properties that carry a Danville mailing address are outside the incorporated Town of Danville, meaning a different local licensing authority may apply. The town’s official Business License guide spells out both points and directs residents to check municipal boundaries before paying.
Who needs a town license?
Danville requires a business license for businesses generating revenue within its town limits, including home-based businesses. A firm without a physical storefront, office or industrial property is considered home-based for town licensing purposes even if most work is performed at clients’ locations. This can encompass online service businesses, consultants and trades working from a residence. Professional or other state and county approvals may also be required depending on the service.
Why does the town boundary matter?
The town emphasizes that some “Danville” addresses lie in unincorporated Contra Costa County. Those businesses may need to obtain a license from the county office in Martinez rather than Danville Town Hall. Check the town’s official boundary tools and ask the licensing office before selecting an application or paying; postal city names and governing jurisdictions are not always the same.
How long does the license run?
Danville’s normal business-license year is July 1 through June 30, with annual renewals. Its online application guide says new applicants are not required to pay when initially submitting the application; the town reviews it and usually sends payment instructions within seven business days. A fee quote and processing period are not a guarantee that zoning or other regulatory requirements have been met.
Will the town mail the certificate?
The municipality says businesses with physical commercial buildings in town may receive paper certificates, while home-based and out-of-town businesses receive electronic copies by email. Its portal supports applications, renewals, changes and business closure notices. Businesses should retain the current certificate and maintain any separate professional registration, county inspection or occupancy permissions applicable to their operations.
What about privacy?
The town application page explains that applicants may be eligible under California law to provide a service-of-process address different from their residential address. Those applicants must contact staff for instructions rather than use the standard online process. Do not assume that all home addresses are automatically hidden from public records.
